Generalitat Of Catalonia
The Generalitat of Catalonia (Catalan: Generalitat de Catalunya) is the institutional system through which the autonomous community of Catalonia exercises self-government within Spain. Its current structure and powers are delineated in the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia of 2006.
The origins of the Generalitat can be traced back to the 13th century with the creation of permanent councils of deputies, known as deputations, which were responsible for the administration of the Courts of the various realms in the Crown of Aragon. This led to the formation of the Deputation of the General of the Principality of Catalonia in 1359. Similar institutions were established in the Kingdom of Aragon in 1362 and the Kingdom of Valencia in 1412.
The modern form of the Generalitat was officially established in 1931 during the Second Spanish Republic, marking the beginning of Catalonia's self-government in the 20th century. However, following the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1940, the Generalitat was abolished, and its president at the time was executed.
The Generalitat is comprised of the Parliament of Catalonia, the President of the Government of Catalonia, and the Executive Council of Catalonia. The Executive Council is often referred to as the Govern or simply as the Government.
The Parliament of Catalonia is the legislative body responsible for enacting laws within the autonomous community, shaping the policies that govern Catalonia. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the autonomous status of the region.
The President of the Government of Catalonia serves as the head of the Generalitat and is responsible for overseeing the administration and execution of policies within the region. This position is a significant symbol of Catalonia's self-government.
The Executive Council, also known as the council of ministers, is tasked with the enforcement of laws and the management of the day-to-day operations of the government. It functions similarly to a cabinet in other democratic government systems.
The headquarters of the Generalitat is located in the Palace of the Generalitat of Catalonia, situated in the city of Barcelona. This historical building serves as the political center of Catalonia, where key governmental functions and meetings take place.
