Electrified Double Track Project: Gemas to Johor Bahru
The Gemas-Johor Bahru Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP) is a significant infrastructure project in Malaysia aimed at modernizing and enhancing the country's railway network. This project is part of a broader government initiative to improve public transport in Malaysia, enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth.
Background
The EDTP is an extension of the electrification and double-tracking of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) railway network. The initial plans for the project were conceived as part of the larger Northern Section EDTP, which aimed to improve rail connectivity from Seremban to Johor Bahru. This project was initially shelved but was revived in 2007 due to increasing demand for efficient public transport options.
Project Development
In 2007, then Deputy Prime Minister Mohd Najib Abdul Razak announced the revival of the project, with further confirmation by Transport Minister Chan Kong Choy regarding the involvement of Ircon International, an Indian engineering company, specifically in the Seremban-Gemas section.
The proposal for the Gemas to Johor Bahru section was put forward in 2009 by Global Rail Sdn Bhd and its Chinese partner, China Infraglobe. The estimated cost for this section was RM5 billion, and it was proposed to be executed on a private finance initiative basis.
Construction and Infrastructure
The construction of the electrified double track from Gemas to Johor Bahru involves significant upgrades to the existing railway infrastructure. The old stations, such as the Sedenak Railway Station and the Kempas Baru Railway Station, were affected, with some being relocated or demolished to accommodate the new infrastructure.
The electrification signifies the transition from diesel-powered trains to electric trains, which are more efficient, faster, and environmentally friendly. This includes installing electric overhead lines and upgrading the tracks to accommodate increased speeds and train frequencies.
Strategic Importance
The Gemas-Johor Bahru EDTP is strategically important as it connects key urban centers along the KTM West Coast Line, facilitating smoother and faster travel from northern Malaysia down to Johor Bahru and across the Johor-Singapore Causeway into Singapore.
This project is part of the wider economic strategy to integrate Malaysian transport infrastructure with that of its neighbors, positioning the region as a transportation hub in Southeast Asia.
