Fumio Kishida
Fumio Kishida is a prominent Japanese politician, who served as the Prime Minister of Japan and the President of the Liberal Democratic Party from October 2021. Born on 29 July 1957 in Shibuya, Tokyo, Kishida's family had deep roots in Hiroshima, a city profoundly affected by the atomic bombing during World War II. Many members of his family perished in the bombing, which deeply influenced his political outlook and policy focus on peace and nuclear disarmament.
Kishida was born into a family with a history of political and civil service. His father, Fumitake Kishida, was a government official in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and served as the director of the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency. Kishida’s upbringing was marked by summer visits to Hiroshima, where he was exposed to the stories of atomic bomb survivors, shaping his future advocacy for nuclear non-proliferation.
Kishida began his political career by winning a seat in the House of Representatives in 1993. He rose through the ranks of the Liberal Democratic Party, holding various significant positions, including the Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2017 under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. His tenure as Foreign Minister was marked by efforts to strengthen Japan's ties with its neighbors and increase its presence on the global stage.
Kishida became the 100th Prime Minister of Japan and formed the First Kishida Cabinet on October 4, 2021. His leadership was characterized by a focus on domestic economic recovery, particularly amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. In January 2022, he emphasized the importance of vaccination, urging the Japanese populace to complete triple or fourth doses to mitigate the spread of the Omicron variant.
He continued to lead during the formation of the Second Kishida Cabinet in November 2021, which maintained a similar focus on economic issues, foreign policy, and the continued management of the pandemic. Despite his efforts, Kishida faced significant challenges, including low approval ratings and economic stagnation, which eventually led to his decision not to seek re-election as the President of the LDP in 2024.
Fumio Kishida is married to Yuko Kishida, and the couple is known for their engagement in various social initiatives. Yuko has supported her husband's political career while also pursuing her own interests in public service and social advocacy.
In a dramatic incident on 15 April 2023, Kishida narrowly escaped an assassination attempt when a pipe bomb exploded near him at a fishing port in Saikazaki, Wakayama. This incident highlighted the political tensions and security concerns surrounding leadership in Japan.
