Freshwater Seal
Freshwater seals are a unique group of pinnipeds that inhabit freshwater bodies. This group is paraphyletic, meaning they are grouped based on their environment rather than evolutionary lineage. These seals have adapted to life in freshwater environments, which is relatively rare among pinnipeds. The best-known members of this group include the Baikal seal, Ladoga ringed seal, Saimaa ringed seal, and the Ungava seal.
Baikal Seal: Found exclusively in Lake Baikal, the Baikal seal is one of the few seal species that are entirely freshwater-dependent. It is also one of the smallest species of earless seals.
Ladoga Ringed Seal: This subspecies of the ringed seal is found in Lake Ladoga in Russia. Like its relatives, it is adapted to the unique ecosystem of the lake.
Saimaa Ringed Seal: Located in Lake Saimaa in Finland, this seal is critically endangered due to its limited range and specific habitat requirements.
Ungava Seal: A subspecies of the harbor seal, the Ungava seal resides in a series of freshwater lakes on the Ungava Peninsula in Canada.
Freshwater habitats are home to a diverse array of species, including the aforementioned seals. These habitats are characterized by low concentrations of dissolved salts and are distinct from marine ecosystems, which have much higher salinity. Types of freshwater habitats include rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, and wetlands.
