Basque Football Federation
The Basque Football Federation, known locally as the [Euskadiko Futbol Federakundea] or [Federación Vasca de Fútbol], is the governing body responsible for overseeing the sport of association football within the Basque Country autonomous region. The Federation's headquarters are situated in Bilbao, located in the Otxarkoaga-Txurdinaga district.
Historical Background
The roots of the Basque Football Federation can be traced back to the early 20th century when separate football federations were created for each of the Basque regions, notably Biscay and Gipuzkoa. The Biscay federation, initially known as the 'North Federation', was formed in 1913 alongside Cantabria. In contrast, Gipuzkoa established its federation in 1918. Each region held its own competitions, namely the Biscay Championship and the Gipuzkoa Championship respectively.
Structure and Organization
The Basque Football Federation is responsible for organizing and managing various leagues and competitions within the region. Among these is Group 4 of the regionalized Tercera División, the fourth tier of the men's Spanish football league system. Unlike many other parts of Spain, leagues from the fifth level down are administered by provincial federations specific to Álava, Biscay, and Gipuzkoa.
The Federation also manages the Basque Youth League and the Basque Women's Football League, in addition to the Basque regional stage of the Federation Cup.
Basque Country National Team
A significant part of the Federation's responsibilities includes organizing and selecting the Basque Country national football team. This team draws its players not only from the Basque Country autonomous region but extends its reach to the neighboring Basque regions of Navarre and the French Basque Country.
Competitions and Promotions
The Federation oversees several competitions. The winners of these competitions, such as the Basque Country fourth-tier group, can achieve promotion to higher competition levels and earn an entry to the subsequent season's Copa del Rey. Certain eligibility criteria must be met, as some teams may be ineligible for promotion due to existing team structures within higher levels.
