The school was established on 26 April 1909 by the Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne, Henry Lowther Clarke. He was motivated by a legacy left for educational purposes and bought a property called 'Gawsworth,' which stretched between Outer and Middle Crescents in Brighton. The school was named after Firbank, Clarke's birthplace in Westmorland, England.
Henry Lowther Clarke also gave the school its motto, "Vincit Qui Se Vincit," which translates to "She conquers who conquers herself." Additionally, he provided the school with his Archbishop crest.
