Ferrocarril De Soller
The Ferrocarril de Sóller is a historic interurban railway on the Spanish island of Mallorca. This railway line, often abbreviated as FS, connects the capital city of Palma de Mallorca with the picturesque town of Sóller. The line is renowned for its scenic views and charming vintage wooden trains, offering passengers a nostalgic travel experience reminiscent of early 20th-century rail travel.
Inaugurated in 1912, the Ferrocarril de Sóller was established to facilitate the transport of citrus fruits, particularly oranges and lemons, from Sóller, which was relatively isolated due to its location within a valley surrounded by the Tramuntana mountain range. Prior to the railway's construction, transporting goods to Palma required a long and arduous journey over mountainous terrain. The railway provided a more efficient and reliable means of transportation, significantly impacting the local economy and accessibility.
The railway runs on a 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge track, a rarity in modern European rail networks. The line stretches approximately 27.3 kilometers (about 17 miles), traversing a variety of landscapes, including farmland, rugged mountains, and tunnels. Notably, the route includes a 2.8-kilometer-long tunnel, which was a significant engineering feat at the time of construction.
The Sóller railway station in Palma is uniquely positioned near the Palma Intermodal Station, allowing for connections with the island's broader public transportation network, including the Palma Metro and bus services.
Complementing the Ferrocarril de Sóller is the Tranvía de Sóller, a heritage tramway that extends from the Sóller railway station to the coastal village of Port de Sóller. The tramway, operational since 1913, offers tourists and locals alike a scenic journey through orchards and along the coastline. It serves as an extension of the primary railway, enhancing connectivity in the region.
The Ferrocarril de Sóller and the Tranvía de Sóller are not only essential transport links but also major tourist attractions. The railway's nostalgic charm and the breathtaking scenery of the Sierra Norte de Mallorca attract visitors from around the world, contributing significantly to the local economy. The railway's preservation as a heritage line underscores its historical and cultural importance to the island of Mallorca.
