Federation Of Africa University Sports
The Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) is the primary governing body responsible for managing and promoting sports activities within African universities. Established in 1971, FASU was founded by ten African countries with the objective of enhancing the development of university sports across the continent.
FASU’s organizational structure is designed to facilitate decision-making and strategic planning for the advancement of sports in African universities. The General Assembly serves as the supreme governing authority of FASU, holding the exclusive power to determine and oversee the federation's general policies. This assembly convenes biennially, ensuring continuous evaluation and adaptation to the needs of university sports.
Supporting the General Assembly is the Executive Committee, which comprises seven members elected for a term of four years. This committee includes the Presidents of the FASU Zones, who collaborate to implement the decisions of the General Assembly and oversee the various sporting events under FASU's purview.
A key event organized by FASU is the All-Africa University Games, a regional multi-sport event that brings together student-athletes from across Africa. These games offer a platform for showcasing athletic talents and fostering cultural exchange among diverse university communities.
FASU is part of a larger network of university sports organizations. It collaborates closely with the International University Sports Federation (FISU), which is responsible for the organization and governance of university sports on a global scale. FASU's alignment with FISU ensures that African universities are represented and participate in international competitions like the FISU World University Games.
In South Africa, FASU works with University Sports South Africa (USSA) to promote sports and manage student-athlete programs, ensuring that South African universities are integrated into the continental and international sports arenas.
The administrative headquarters of FASU is located in Kampala, Uganda, providing a central point for coordinating activities across its member countries. The Secretariat, based at this location, handles the day-to-day operations and communication necessary to support FASU’s extensive network.
