Foundation and Growth of Wikipedia
Foundation of Wikipedia
The inception of Wikipedia traces back to January 2001, when it was co-founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. Initially conceptualized as Nupedia, an expert-written and peer-reviewed web-based encyclopedia, Wikipedia emerged as a side project to allow open collaboration and immediate editing by the wider public. This model facilitated swift content creation, an idea that differentiated Wikipedia from its predecessor. The English Wikipedia was the first edition, launched on January 15, 2001.
In 2003, the Wikimedia Foundation was established in San Francisco, California, as a nonprofit organization to host and manage Wikipedia, alongside other projects like Wiktionary, Wikibooks, and Wikinews. The foundation's mission is to provide free educational content to everyone in the world, supporting the ethos of a free and open internet.
Growth of Wikipedia
The growth of Wikipedia is marked by exponential increases in both content and user engagement. During the early years, the addition of new articles and the expansion of the Wikipedia community, known as Wikipedians, occurred at a rapid pace. This growth was facilitated by the wiki software architecture, which allowed real-time editing and the collaborative nature that Wikipedia espoused.
The English Wikipedia serves as the largest and most comprehensive edition, but many other language editions rapidly grew, such as the German Wikipedia and the Indonesian Wikipedia. By 2005, Wikipedia had become one of the top 50 websites globally, largely due to its vast, diverse, and self-regulated content.
However, the rapid growth also brought challenges. Debates about ideological bias, censorship, and content reliability emerged. The Chinese Wikipedia, for instance, faced censorship from Chinese authorities, affecting its growth and accessibility. Similarly, the Bengali Wikipedia and Greek Wikipedia are examples of regional editions that had to navigate local linguistic and cultural challenges.
The Wikimedia Foundation has also faced legal and financial challenges over the years, as detailed in the litigation involving the Wikimedia Foundation and events listed in the list of Wikipedia controversies.
