Englewood Neighborhood Chicago
Englewood is a significant neighborhood and community area located on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. As the 68th of the 77 community areas in Chicago, it has a complex and rich history that reflects both the challenges and triumphs of urban American communities.
Englewood's history began in earnest with its annexation to the Town of Lake in 1865, and subsequently to Chicago in 1889. The development of Englewood was strongly influenced by the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 at nearby Jackson Park, which spurred real estate speculation and expansion.
During its heyday, the community was centered around the Englewood Shopping Center, located at the intersection of 63rd & Halsted. This mall was more than just a commercial center; it was a cultural hub where numerous community events, parades, and outdoor concerts took place. The efforts of the city, social services, and local leaders were instrumental in integrating the mall with the broader community.
At its peak in 1960, Englewood was home to over 97,000 residents. However, the population has since witnessed a dramatic decline due to various socio-economic factors, including white flight and economic downturns. Today, Englewood grapples with issues such as adolescent violence and safety concerns, partly due to its socio-economic challenges.
Englewood is well-served by public transportation, with major thoroughfares such as Halsted Street running through the neighborhood. The Red Line and Green Line of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) provide vital links to other parts of the city, complemented by the Dan Ryan Expressway.
Englewood is a community in transition, with numerous initiatives aimed at revitalization and community empowerment. Kennedy–King College moved to Englewood in 2005, enhancing educational opportunities for residents. The Englewood Quality-of-Life Plan is a community-driven process involving residents, leaders, and institutions working together to address local issues and improve living conditions.
Teamwork Englewood is one of the leading organizations focusing on community projects, educational programs, and economic development. Initiatives like the Grow Your Own Teacher Scholarship have been instrumental in fostering local talent and encouraging community members to contribute positively to the neighborhood's future.
Englewood has been historically associated with crime and gang activities, such as the rise of the Gangster Disciples originating in the area. High-profile incidents like the murder of Joseph J. Coleman have brought national attention to the challenges faced by the community.
Englewood continues to be a focal point for discussions on urban renewal and community empowerment, serving as a testament to the enduring spirit of its residents.
