Englewood is a significant neighborhood and community area located on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. As the 68th of the 77 community areas in Chicago, it has a complex and rich history that reflects both the challenges and triumphs of urban American communities.

Historical Development

Englewood's history began in earnest with its annexation to the Town of Lake in 1865, and subsequently to Chicago in 1889. The development of Englewood was strongly influenced by the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 at nearby Jackson Park, which spurred real estate speculation and expansion.

During its heyday, the community was centered around the Englewood Shopping Center, located at the intersection of 63rd & Halsted. This mall was more than just a commercial center; it was a cultural hub where numerous community events, parades, and outdoor concerts took place. Demographics and Economy

At its peak in 1960, Englewood was home to over 97,000 residents.
