Electronic City
Electronic City is a prominent information technology hub located in Bengaluru, India, within the Anekal Taluk. Spread across over 800 acres near the areas of Konappana Agrahara and Doddathogur, it is home to a multitude of electronic and IT industrial parks. This area is an epitome of high-tech development and symbolizes the rapid technological advancements in India.
History
The creation of Electronic City was spearheaded by R. K. Baliga, the visionary first Chairman and Managing Director of Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (KEONICS). Established in 1978, Electronic City was initially developed on 332 acres of land. Baliga's ambition was to transform Bengaluru into the Silicon Valley of India, and Electronic City was a pivotal component of this ambitious vision.
The growth of Electronic City was significantly accelerated by the economic liberalization policies in the early 1990s, under the leadership of then Indian Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. These policies opened India to foreign investments and trade, bolstering the tech industry's expansion and establishing Electronic City as the outsourcing capital of the world.
Infrastructure and Governance
The maintenance and governance of Electronic City are managed by the Electronic City Township Industries Association (ELCITA). This body, composed of representatives from various industries within the enclave, was entrusted with this responsibility in 1997. ELCITA ensures security and effective local governance, employing around 500 security officials and deploying CCTV cameras throughout the area.
To improve connectivity, the Electronic City Elevated Expressway was constructed, providing a 9.985 km long elevated highway from the Silk Board junction to Electronic City. Additionally, public transport is supported by the Electronic City Metro Station on the Yellow Line of the Namma Metro.
Economic and Educational Impact
Electronic City houses numerous multinational IT companies, contributing significantly to the Indian economy and providing employment opportunities to thousands. The establishment of this IT hub has also spurred the development of educational institutions like PES University, which caters to the demand for skilled professionals in the industry.
