El Prat Airport
Barcelona–El Prat Airport, officially known as Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport, is the primary international airport serving Barcelona, Spain. It is located approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) southwest of the center of Barcelona, predominantly within the limits of the municipality of El Prat de Llobregat. The airport also extends into the municipalities of Viladecans and Sant Boi de Llobregat.
The airport originally opened in 1918 and has since undergone several expansions to accommodate increasing passenger demand. A significant development occurred prior to the 1992 Summer Olympics, which led to the expansion of Terminal 2 (T2), previously known as Terminal B. T2 was divided into three sections: Terminal 2A, 2B, and 2C.
In 2009, Terminal 1 (T1) was opened to further increase the airport's capacity, allowing it to handle up to 55 million passengers annually and facilitate up to 90 operations per hour. This terminal has significantly enhanced the airport's role as a major hub in southern Europe.
The airport consists of two main terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Terminal 1, the newer and larger of the two, serves the majority of flights and airlines. Terminal 2, despite being older, continues to operate efficiently and serves several low-cost airlines.
The Barcelona Metro provides a convenient link to the airport via Line 9, with stations serving both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The metro stations, Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2, facilitate easy connections for passengers traveling to and from the city center.
Barcelona–El Prat Airport serves as a base for numerous airlines, including Level, which launched transatlantic services from the airport in 2017. The airport offers a wide range of domestic, European, and long-haul international flights.
As Spain's second-largest airport, Barcelona–El Prat plays a crucial role in connecting Barcelona with the rest of Europe and the world. Its proximity to the city's major attractions and the Port of Barcelona—one of Europe's busiest seaports—enhances its significance as a transportation hub and contributes to the city's status as a leading tourist destination.
