Edirne
Edirne, historically known as Adrianople, is a city in Turkey, situated in the northwestern part of the province of Edirne in East Thrace. Located just 7 km from the Greek border and 20 km from the Bulgarian border, Edirne is strategically significant. This city was the second capital of the Ottoman Empire from 1369 until the conquest of Constantinople in 1453.
Edirne's history is rich and varied. The city was originally known as Adrianople after the Roman Emperor Hadrian, who founded it. Over the centuries, Edirne witnessed several key historical events. During the First Balkan War, it was the site of the Siege of Adrianople (1912–1913). Later, it was recaptured by the Ottoman Empire during the Siege of Adrianople (1913).
Edirne is home to many significant architectural marvels, most notably the Selimiye Mosque. This Ottoman imperial mosque, commissioned by Sultan Selim II and designed by Mimar Sinan, stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of the empire. Another notable mosque in Edirne is the Old Mosque, known for its stunning calligraphy and historical significance.
Historically, Edirne has been a commercial hub, known for its woven textiles, silks, carpets, and agricultural products. The city continues to thrive with a growing tourism industry. It is also the administrative center of Edirne Province and Edirne District. As of 2022, the population of Edirne was 180,002.
In the local elections held on March 31, 2024, lawyer Filiz Gencan Akin was elected as the new mayor of Edirne, succeeding Recep Gürkan, who had been the mayor for a decade.
Another significant historical site in Edirne is the Edirne Palace, also known as the New Imperial Palace. This was a former palace of the Ottoman sultans and is a site of considerable historical importance.
Edirne is part of the East Thrace region, which includes the Turkish provinces of Edirne, Tekirdağ, and Kırklareli. The region is known for its rich cultural heritage and historical sites, including the Church of Saint John the Baptist in Uzunköprü and the historical Grand Synagogue of Edirne.
