Historical Background
The foundation of Edinburgh Napier University can be traced back to 1964 with the establishment of Napier Technical College, named after John Napier. Napier was born in 1550 in the historic Merchiston Tower, which now forms part of the university's Merchiston campus.
In 1974, Napier Technical College merged with the Sighthill-based Edinburgh College of Commerce, leading to the formation of Napier College of Commerce and Technology. It earned the status of a Central Institution in 1985, and was renamed Napier Polytechnic in 1986. The same year saw the acquisition of the former Hydropathic hospital buildings at Craiglockhart. The institution achieved university status in June 1992, officially becoming Napier University.
