The Eastern Cape is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. Formation and Geography
The Eastern Cape was established in 1994 following the dissolution of the bantustans of Transkei and Ciskei, alongside the eastern portion of the former Cape Province. It encompasses an area of approximately 168,966 square kilometers, making it the second-largest province in South Africa after the Northern Cape.
The province is characterized by its varied topography that ranges from the coastal areas along the Indian Ocean to the inland plateaus and mountainous regions. This geographic diversity supports various ecosystems and is home to numerous nature reserves and national parks.
Demographics and Culture
The Eastern Cape is predominantly inhabited by the Xhosa people, with the province being a traditional stronghold of Xhosa culture.
