East Klang Valley Expressway

The East Klang Valley Expressway, designated as the E27, is a significant infrastructural project within the Klang Valley region of Malaysia. Also referred to as the Kuala Lumpur North Dispersal Expressway or the Kuala Lumpur Outer Ring Road, this expressway aims to enhance connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in one of the most densely populated and urbanized areas of the country.

The expressway stretches over a distance of approximately 39.5 kilometers (24.5 miles), creating an essential link between Ukay Perdana in Ampang, Selangor, and Bandar Sungai Long in Kajang. This strategic corridor is designed to serve as a vital connection for residents and businesses, facilitating smoother transit and economic activities within the region.

Development and Features

The East Klang Valley Expressway is developed in phases, with Phase 1A opening on August 29, 2025. This particular phase faced an initial delay of six years, attributed to various logistical and environmental challenges. Key interchanges along the expressway include connections at Lembah Jaya in Ampang, providing critical junctions for traffic flow and access.

One noteworthy aspect of the expressway's development was its design modification to avoid environmentally sensitive areas, notably the Klang Gates Quartz Ridge located at Melawati. Such adjustments were made in response to public protests and environmental considerations, highlighting the challenges of urban development in ecologically sensitive regions.

Environmental Considerations

The construction and alignment of the expressway have been subjects of public scrutiny, particularly regarding the de-gazetting of 106.6 hectares of the Ampang Forest Reserve. This forest reserve is crucial as a source of water for the Klang Valley, and its partial de-gazetting sparked significant environmental concerns and criticisms. The project’s impact on this critical ecological resource underscores the ongoing tensions between infrastructure development and environmental preservation.

Related Expressways

The East Klang Valley Expressway is part of a broader network of expressways in the region, which includes the South Klang Valley Expressway, New Klang Valley Expressway, Duta–Ulu Klang Expressway, and Shah Alam Expressway. Each of these routes plays a role in facilitating transportation, supporting economic activities, and improving accessibility throughout the Klang Valley.
