Divisional Secretariats of Sri Lanka

The Divisional Secretariats of Sri Lanka are key administrative units that form the third-level of the country's administrative division. These secretariats are essential for local governance, acting as intermediaries between the central government and the local communities.

Historical Background

The concept of Divisional Secretariats dates back to the colonial era. Initially, these divisions were known as D.R.O. (Divisional Revenue Officer) divisions. The primary role of the D.R.O. was to oversee revenue collection and administration within their respective divisions. Over time, the D.R.O. divisions evolved into the modern-day Divisional Secretariats, reflecting a shift towards a more structured and formalized local governance system.

Administrative Structure

Sri Lanka is divided into 9 provinces, each of which is further divided into districts. Each district is subdivided into multiple Divisional Secretariats. As of now, there are 331 Divisional Secretariats across the country. • Thanamalvila Divisional Secretariat: Serving the Moneragala District of the Uva Province, an area noted for its rural landscape.
