Director General of Police in India

The Director General of Police (DGP) is the highest-ranking police officer in each of the Indian states and union territories. This position carries the responsibility of overseeing state police forces and ensuring law enforcement within the jurisdiction. The DGP holds a three-star rank and is appointed by the state cabinet.

Role and Responsibilities

The DGP plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order, implementing policies, and managing the police force effectively. They are accountable for the overall functioning of the police department, which includes supervising operations, administering the budget, and coordinating with other law enforcement agencies. The DGP ensures that policies emanating from the Ministry of Home Affairs are implemented at the state level.

Appointment Process

The appointment of a DGP follows a structured process that is mandated by the Supreme Court of India. This process was largely influenced by the Prakash Singh case of 2006, which called for police reforms in India. As per these directives, the appointment is based on merit and seniority, ensuring that competent officers lead the police force.

Rank and Insignia

DGP-ranked officers wear distinctive Gorget patches on their collars. These patches include a dark blue background with an oak leaf pattern stitched on, similar to those worn by Additional Directors General and Inspectors General. The DGP ranks are equivalent to senior-most officials in other Indian Police Service (IPS) positions, reflecting their high status within the police hierarchy.

Salary and Benefits

In November 2022, the government approved a proposal to ensure that Directors of Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) receive apex scale salaries. This decision places them on par with Secretary-rank Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers, underscoring the importance and recognition given to DGPs.
