  4. Electro-Diesel Locomotives: Also known as dual-mode locomotives, these can operate as electric locomotives using overhead wires or as diesel-electric locomotives using their onboard diesel engine.

The diesel engine is an internal combustion engine in which the ignition of diesel fuel is caused by high temperatures resulting from compressed air in the cylinder. The concept of the diesel engine was invented by Rudolf Diesel, and it has since become a prominent power source for various applications, including locomotives, automobiles, and industrial machinery.

Diesel engines in locomotives are robust and capable of continuous high-power output, which is essential for hauling heavy loads over long distances. These engines come in various configurations, such as the inline and V configurations, commonly used in the Detroit Diesel Series 71 engines.
