Derby City Council
Derby City Council is the local government authority for the city of Derby, situated in the ceremonial county of Derbyshire within the East Midlands region of England. The council functions as a unitary authority, meaning it carries out the roles of both a district council and a county council, providing an integrated level of governance since 1997.
Derby's history with local governance dates back to medieval times and has undergone numerous transformations since then. The city retained its borough status, which allows the chair of the council to hold the title of mayor. Derby's lineage of mayors dates back to 1638. Significantly, on 7 June 1977, Derby was awarded city status during the celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee, enabling the borough council to rename itself as Derby City Council.
The transformation into a unitary authority was achieved by creating a new non-metropolitan county of Derby, encompassing the same area as the existing district but without a separate county council. As such, the existing city council assumed both district and county responsibilities, allowing for streamlined governance and service delivery.
Elections for Derby City Council are held every four years. The council consists of 51 elected members, responsible for making decisions on local services, budgets, and policies. The most recent election took place on 4 May 2023. Various political parties contest these elections, including local affiliates like Reform Derby that operate in tandem with national parties such as Reform UK.
As a unitary authority, Derby City Council is entrusted with a wide range of responsibilities. These include but are not limited to:
