Deportivo de La Coruña Women

Deportivo de La Coruña Women, also known as Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña Femenino, is the women's football section of Deportivo de La Coruña. This club is based in the city of A Coruña in Galicia, Spain.

Historical Background

The women's team of Deportivo de La Coruña has its roots going back to the winter of 1983–84 when Deportivo absorbed Karbo C.F. The latter was fully integrated into the structure of Deportivo, adopting its colors and emblem. The newly formed team, then known as Karbo Deportivo, became a dominant force in early women's football competitions in Spain, winning the inaugural tournaments of the Spanish Championship, now known as the Copa de la Reina, until 1985.

However, the club faced significant challenges in the late 1980s. By 1988, the women's section was dissolved due to economic difficulties faced by the parent club R.C. Deportivo, which was struggling with substantial debt and looming relegation to Segunda División B. The growing professionalization of women's football, which increased operational costs, further strained the club's finances.

Revival and Modern Era

On March 16, 2016, Deportivo de La Coruña announced the revival of its women's section, marking a new chapter in the club's history. This decision was in line with the increasing popularity and professionalization of women's football worldwide.
