Cypress Point Club
The Cypress Point Club is a renowned private golf club situated in Pebble Beach, California, along the picturesque Central Coast of the United States. The club is famed for its exclusive and elite membership, as well as its stunning 18-hole golf course that offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.
History
The Cypress Point Club first opened its doors in 1929. The clubhouse was designed by George Washington Smith, an architect known for his work in Santa Barbara, and decorated by artist and club member Francis McComas along with Frances Elkins. The design has remained largely unaltered since its opening, maintaining its historic charm.
Golf Course Design
The course was meticulously crafted by the legendary golf course architect Alister MacKenzie, who is also credited with designing other world-famous courses such as Augusta National Golf Club and the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. The Cypress Point Club is often ranked among the best golf courses globally due to its unique layout and challenging play.
The course is characterized by its front nine holes, which meander through the Del Monte Forest, and its back nine, which dramatically reemerges along the rugged coastline. The signature hole, the 16th, is particularly notable, requiring a 230-yard tee shot over the Pacific to a well-protected green.
Membership and Controversy
Historically, the club was known for its exclusivity and the demographic of its membership. It gained notoriety for its participation in the PGA Tour's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am from 1947 to 1990. However, it was removed from the tour rotation due to its lack of diversity, as it had no non-white members at that time and was not willing to comply with the tour's anti-discrimination guidelines.
In recent years, the club has made strides towards inclusivity, notably admitting Condoleezza Rice as a member, marking a significant shift in its membership policies.
Recognition
Cypress Point Club consistently receives accolades and high rankings. It was ranked number one by Top100GolfCourses.com and third on the 2025 list of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses by Golf Digest. Such recognition underscores its standing in the golfing world as a course of unparalleled beauty and golfing challenge.
Events
In addition to its prestige as a golf course, Cypress Point Club is slated to host significant golf events, such as the Walker Cup Match in 2025, further cementing its position as a key location in the world of golf.
