The origins of Cranbrook School date back to 1 December 1917 when the former private home and vice-regal residence, known as Cranbrook, was purchased at auction by an agent for Samuel Hordern. From December 1917 to June 1918, a provisional committee of twelve, including the school's founders and six additional members, prepared for the opening of the school. These preparations involved renovating the historic building, drafting the first articles of association, and appointing the first Headmaster, Rev. F. T. Perkins. The official opening of Cranbrook School took place on 22 July 1918.
