Council Of Global Unions
The Council of Global Unions (CGU) is a collaborative platform that unites several major global union federations to promote the interests and rights of workers around the world. The CGU serves as a key mechanism for fostering cooperation and collective action amongst the diverse international trade unions.
The CGU emerged from a reorganization of the international trade union movement in November 2006. This restructuring was aimed at unifying the efforts of global unions to address the challenges facing workers in an increasingly globalized economy. It was formed alongside the International Trade Union Confederation, which resulted from the merger of the World Confederation of Labour and the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions.
The Council of Global Unions comprises ten global union federations and associated organizations. These federations represent a wide range of sectors, including:
The CGU operates through a Chair and a Secretary, who are elected from among the member unions. The current Chair is Christy Hoffman from UNI Global Union, and the Secretary is Luc Triangle from the International Trade Union Confederation.
The primary objectives of the CGU include:
The CGU organizes campaigns, conferences, and meetings to address these objectives and facilitate dialogue among its member unions.
This framework enables the Council of Global Unions to function as a cohesive unit, advocating for the rights and welfare of workers worldwide.
