Communist Party of the Peoples of Spain (PCPE)
The Communist Party of the Peoples of Spain (PCPE) is a Marxist–Leninist political party established in Spain in 1984. The party was formed as a reaction against the Eurocommunist orientation adopted by the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) under the leadership of Santiago Carrillo.
Formation and Ideology
The PCPE emerged during the "Communist Unity Congress" held in Madrid from December 13–15, 1984. It was a merger of several groups including Partido Comunista de España Unificado (Unified Communist Party of Spain), Movimiento de Recuperación del PCE (Movement for the Recuperation of the PCE), Movimiento para la Recuperación y Unificación del PCE (Movement for the Recuperation and Unification of the PCE), Candidatura Comunista (Communist Candidature), and several minor factions. These groups united under a single banner in opposition to the [PCE]'s deviation from orthodox Marxism-Leninism.
The primary ideology of the PCPE is based on the principles of Marxism and Leninism, with a strong emphasis on anti-revisionism. The party promotes the establishment of a dictatorship of the proletariat and seeks to build a socialist state in Spain.
Organizational Structure
The party's youth wing is known as the Communist Youth of the Peoples of Spain. Initially, the Catalan counterpart of the PCPE was the Party of Communists of Catalonia. However, this changed when the Catalan branch became independent, leading to the formation of the Communist Party of the Peoples of Catalonia.
Split and Recognition
In the years following its foundation, the PCPE experienced internal strife, leading to a significant split. In 2019, the faction led by García conceded the PCPE name and rebranded itself as the Communist Party of the Workers of Spain (PCTE).
Participation and Influence
Since its inception, the PCPE has been an active participant in various political coalitions and movements. It is a member of the International Meeting of Communist and Workers' Parties, which includes various communist parties worldwide, promoting solidarity and cooperation among global Marxist-Leninist organizations.
