Cologne (/kə.ˈloʊn/ kə-LOHN; German: Köln [kœln] ; Kölsch: Kölle [ˈkœ̂lə]) is the fourth-most populous city in Germany and the largest city of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Geography
Cologne is strategically situated on the left bank of the Rhine River, about 35 kilometers southeast of Düsseldorf, the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, and 22 kilometers northwest of Bonn, the former capital of West Germany. History
Cologne's origins trace back to Roman times. The city was founded as Colonia Agrippina in the 1st century AD within the territory of the Germanic Ubii. The name "Agrippina" was eventually dropped, and "Colonia" evolved into the modern German "Köln."
