College Conference Illinois Wisconsin
The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) is an American intercollegiate athletic conference that is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. The CCIW has a rich history of fostering athletic competition among colleges located primarily in the states of Illinois and Wisconsin.
The CCIW was originally established on April 26, 1946, as the College Conference of Illinois. The initial membership included nine colleges: Augustana College, Carthage College, Elmhurst College, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan University, Lake Forest College, Millikin University, North Central College, and Wheaton College. In the 1967-68 academic year, the conference was rebranded as the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin to acknowledge the involvement of Carthage, which had moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Carroll University, which joined in 1955.
The CCIW is known for its competitive sports programs in various disciplines, including football, basketball, and lacrosse. The conference has produced numerous athletes who have excelled both on and off the field. Teams from the CCIW have often performed well in NCAA national championships.
Over the years, the CCIW has seen changes in its membership. Illinois College, one of the original members, left the conference in 1953. This dynamic nature of the conference has helped it in adapting to the evolving landscape of collegiate sports in the U.S.
While the CCIW primarily serves Division III institutions, it operates in a region that is also home to the prominent Big Ten Conference. The Big Ten is one of the oldest Division I athletic conferences in the United States, with notable members like the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Big Ten has undergone several realignments and expansions, affecting sports culture in the region.
The CCIW is significant not only for its athletic contributions but also for its role in fostering academic excellence and collaboration among member institutions. The conference operates in a region known for its educational institutions and commitment to student-athlete development.
