City Council Of Barcelona
The City Council of Barcelona, also known in Catalan as "Ajuntament de Barcelona" and in Spanish as "Ayuntamiento de Barcelona," is the principal administrative and governing body of Barcelona, the capital city of the autonomous community of Catalonia in northeastern Spain.
The City Council of Barcelona is composed of several key entities, including the invested Mayor of Barcelona, currently Jaume Collboni, the Government Commission, and the deliberative Plenary (Consell Municipal). The Plenary consists of 41 elected members who have scrutiny powers over municipal activities. The Mayor is elected from among the members of the Plenary on the day the new municipal corporation is formed following local elections. The Mayor serves a mandate of four years, aligning with the term of the elected body. Should the Mayor vacate the position prematurely, an interim local councillor, typically the first deputy mayor, may act as the acting Mayor until a new election takes place within the Plenary.
Barcelona's municipal elections are a crucial component of its local governance. The most recent election occurred on 28 May 2023, to elect the 12th City Council, with all 41 council seats available for election. These elections have been a regular feature since the restoration of the democratic system in Spain, with earlier elections held in 2019, 2007, and other years. The forthcoming election is scheduled for 23 May 2027, which will elect the 13th City Council.
The City Council handles a wide array of administrative functions crucial to the urban management of Barcelona. This includes overseeing the districts of Barcelona, which are the administrative subdivisions of the city. Each district is governed by a councillor designated by the City Council, ensuring localized governance and administration.
The Barcelona City Hall, known in Catalan as "Casa de la Ciutat de Barcelona" and in Spanish as "Casa de la Ciudad de Barcelona," serves as the seat of the City Council. It is situated in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, a historical neighborhood.
The coat of arms of Barcelona is an emblematic representation of the city and is associated with the City Council. The coat of arms has medieval origins and has evolved to represent the city through various iterations. Similarly, the flag of Barcelona was officially adopted by the City Council in 1996 and features the city’s logo, which incorporates elements from the coat of arms.
