Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (IATA: BOM, ICAO: VABB) is the primary international airport serving Mumbai, the vibrant capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It stands as one of the busiest airports in India and serves as a major aviation hub in South Asia.
The airport, initially known as Sahar International Airport, was renamed in 1999 to honor the revered Maratha leader, Chhatrapati Shivaji, a decision that reflects India's deep respect for its historical figures. The title "Maharaj" was later added on August 30, 2018, further enhancing its tribute to the great warrior king.
Terminal 1, primarily serving domestic flights, was originally known as the "Santa Cruz Airport". It has since undergone significant renovations to accommodate the increasing passenger traffic and provide a seamless travel experience.
Terminal 2, also referred to as T2, is a state-of-the-art facility that caters to both domestic and international flights. It is renowned for its striking architecture and modern amenities, making it a vital part of Mumbai's transportation infrastructure. The terminal is also integrated with the Mumbai Metro through the underground metro station, enhancing its accessibility.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is well-connected to various parts of Mumbai and neighboring regions. Several Mumbai Metro lines including the Aqua Line and Gold Line facilitate easy transit to and from the airport. Plans are underway to improve connectivity further through new metro extensions.
The airport offers an array of amenities designed to enhance passenger comfort and convenience. This includes lounges, retail and dining outlets, and efficient baggage handling systems. These facilities are aimed at providing travelers with a comfortable and efficient transit experience.
In May 2012, an incident involving Air India Flight 112 occurred, where a Boeing 777 sustained damage upon landing due to unknown causes. This incident highlights the challenges and complexities of managing one of the world's busiest international airports.
As passenger numbers continue to grow, there are ongoing efforts to expand and upgrade the airport facilities. The development of the Navi Mumbai International Airport is also in progress to alleviate congestion and serve as a complementary facility to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
