Chartered Institute Of Taxation

Chartered Institute of Taxation

The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) is a prominent professional body in the United Kingdom focused exclusively on taxation. As a registered charity, CIOT's primary mission is to promote education and understanding of taxation through rigorous qualifications and advocacy.

History and Formation

Founded in 1930, the Institute of Taxation was the precursor to what is now the CIOT. It was incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee and later acquired a Royal Charter, affirming its status as a significant institution within the UK. Among the founder members was Ronald Staples, known for being the founding editor of Taxation Magazine.

Membership and Qualifications

Membership in CIOT is achieved by passing the CTA examinations and completing three years of practical taxation experience. Successful members are designated as Chartered Tax Advisers, using the letters CTA. Those who joined prior to the redesignation may continue using the letters ATII (Associate of the Taxation Institute Incorporated). CIOT collaborates with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales through the ACA/CTA Joint Programme, enabling students to secure dual qualifications in a shorter time frame since 2014.

Global Influence and Partnerships

CIOT's influence extends internationally, offering the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation, a professional qualification catering to a global audience. The Institute's practices and standards have catalyzed the formation of similar bodies worldwide, such as the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Ghana, and the South African Institute of Taxation.

Related Associations

The Institute of Indirect Taxation, once a distinct entity, merged with CIOT, further consolidating expertise in indirect taxes. Another notable entity is the West African Union of Tax Institutes, formed by the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, reflecting a regional collaboration within the field of taxation.

Notable Figures

Prominent individuals associated with CIOT and its global counterparts include Taiwo Oyedele, a respected Fellow of CIOT and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, and Rasaq Adekunle Quadri, who served as the President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria and the first President of the West African Union of Tax Institutes.
