The Central Market was established in 1888 as a wet market. It originally catered to the local community, providing a space where fresh produce and goods were traded. Situated at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, formerly known as Foch Avenue, and the pedestrian-only section of Jalan Hang Kasturi, previously Rodger Street, it is conveniently located near Petaling Street and adjacent to the Klang River.
The market's layout is designed to resemble a traditional stall concept, reminiscent of the markets in Kuala Lumpur since the 1800s. It is divided into various sections such as Lorong Melayu, Straits Chinese, and Lorong India, located on the west wing. Notably, the market features both two-storey and single-storey buildings that mimic the traditional Kampong-style houses, representing the harmonious coexistence of the many ethnic groups in Kuala Lumpur.
