The region was formally established in 2008 following the amalgamation of the Shire of Cardwell and the Shire of Johnstone.

The Cassowary Coast Region's history is deeply intertwined with the development of its constituent shires, the Shire of Cardwell and the Shire of Johnstone, prior to their merger in 2008. The area has long been recognized for its agricultural productivity, particularly in sugar cane farming, which has been a significant industry in the region. The region also has a rich Indigenous heritage, with the Djiru people being among the original inhabitants.
