Carl Mayer von Rothschild

Carl Mayer Freiherr von Rothschild (April 24, 1788 – March 10, 1855) was a prominent banker of the 19th century, who played a crucial role in the establishment and expansion of the Rothschild banking family of Naples. He is recognized as a key figure in the Rothschild family, which became influential in European finance and politics.

Early Life and Family Background

Carl Mayer was born in Frankfurt, part of what is now Germany. He was a member of the esteemed Rothschild family, a Jewish banking dynasty that significantly influenced global finance in the 19th century. His father, Mayer Amschel Rothschild, laid the foundation for the family's banking empire.

Banking Career in Naples

Carl Mayer was sent to Naples, in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, to expand the family's banking interests. Under his leadership, the Naples branch of the Rothschild bank grew considerably, serving notable clients such as the Vatican, the Dukes of Parma, and the Dukes of Tuscany. His influence extended to the Bourbon monarchy in Naples, strengthening the family's political and economic power in the region.

Titles and Honors

In 1822, Carl Mayer, alongside his four brothers, was granted the title of Baron, or Freiherr, by Kaiser Franz I of Austria. This title solidified the Rothschilds’ status as one of the most prestigious families in Europe.

Personal Life

Carl Mayer married Adelheid Hertz, with whom he had several children. Among these were Mayer Carl von Rothschild, Wilhelm Carl von Rothschild, and Adolph Carl von Rothschild. After Adelheid's death in 1853, Carl Mayer fell into a period of mourning, exacerbated by the passing of his son Anselm Alexander Carl in 1854.

Legacy and Succession

Carl Mayer's death in 1855 marked a significant transition for the Naples branch of the Rothschild family. His son, Adolf Carl von Rothschild, succeeded him in Naples, while his other sons took over operations in Frankfurt. Despite his desire for Mayer Carl to continue the business in Naples, the family’s interests became more diversified across Europe.
