Canada is a sprawling nation located in North America, known for its vast landscapes, multicultural population, and significant role on the global stage. This geographic expanse makes Canada the second largest country in the world by land area.

History

The land known today as Canada has been inhabited by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. These groups have rich cultural heritages and histories that predate European settlement. In the 16th century, Canada began to see the arrival of British and French explorers, who settled along the eastern coast. Conflicts, including the Seven Years' War, led to France ceding most of its North American territories to Britain in 1763.

In 1867, the British North America Act united three British colonies—Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada—into a single country known as the Dominion of Canada. This act is regarded as the birth of modern Canada, which gradually expanded westward and northward by incorporating other provinces and territories.
