BYD Company Limited, a Chinese multinational conglomerate, is a titan in the automotive, battery, and energy storage sectors. Established in February 1995 by Wang Chuanfu, BYD initially made its mark as a battery manufacturing company. Over the years, it has expanded its operations significantly and diversified into several sectors, including automotive manufacturing, renewable energy, and public transportation.
Founded in 1995, BYD began primarily as a battery manufacturer. The company quickly gained prominence and grew to become one of the world's largest producers of rechargeable batteries. In 2003, BYD expanded into the automotive industry with the establishment of its subsidiary, BYD Auto, which has since become a global leader in the production of plug-in electric vehicles.
BYD's automotive division has been a significant driver of its growth, contributing over 50% of the company's revenue since 2009. By 2023, the automotive sector made up more than 80% of BYD's total revenue. Over time, the company's product lineup has expanded beyond electric vehicles to include forklifts, solar panels, semiconductors, and rail transit systems.
One of BYD's most notable achievements is the development of the DMO platform, a comprehensive solution integrating over two decades of technological advancements. This platform has been instrumental in enhancing the capabilities of BYD's new energy vehicles, pushing the boundaries of their use across various scenarios.
The Blade Battery, another significant innovation, was introduced to improve the range and safety of electric vehicles. The BYD HAN EV, equipped with this battery, boasts a range capacity of 372 miles, with future models expected to achieve between 434 and 497 miles.
BYD has established itself as a formidable player in the global market. As of 2024, the company was the world's second-largest producer of electric vehicle batteries, capturing a 17% market share, second only to Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL). In addition, since 2022, BYD has been recognized as China's largest private-sector employer, employing 900,608 individuals by September 2024, with a significant portion dedicated to research and development.
In its relentless pursuit of innovation, BYD has been prolific in patent filings, with more than 13,000 patents submitted between 2003 and 2023. This commitment to innovation underscores BYD's role as a leader in technological development within its industries.
