Buriram Province

Buriram Province (Thai: จังหวัดบุรีรัมย์, RTGS: Changwat Buri Ram) is one of Thailand's seventy-seven provinces, located in the lower northeastern region known as Isan. With its rich historical background and contemporary significance, Buriram offers a unique blend of ancient culture and modern-day attractions.

Geography

Buriram is bordered by several provinces: Sa Kaeo to the south, Nakhon Ratchasima to the west, Khon Kaen to the northwest, Maha Sarakham to the north, and Surin to the east. The province is characterized by its flat plains and extinct volcanic formations, providing fertile grounds for agriculture, the mainstay of the local economy.

History

Approximately a millennium ago, the region now known as Buriram was under the control of the Khmer Empire, leaving behind numerous ruins. The most significant site is the Phanom Rung Historical Park, located on an extinct volcano. An inscription discovered at this site indicates that local rulers acknowledged the authority of the Khmer king.

During the early-19th century, as the Rattanakosin Kingdom expanded, the area's dominant town, Muang Pae, accepted Thai sovereignty and was renamed Buriram. The late 19th-century administrative reforms led to Buriram's incorporation as a province with its own governor, establishing the foundation for its modern governance structure.

Buriram is renowned for its vibrant cultural heritage, which is celebrated in various festivals and events throughout the year. A prominent feature of the province is the Buriram International Circuit, a motorsport race track that hosts the Thailand motorcycle Grand Prix, drawing international visitors and enthusiasts.

The province is also home to Buriram United Football Club, a highly successful Thai professional football club that competes at the top level of Thai football. Their matches are held at the Buriram Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility in the province’s capital district, Mueang Buriram.
