Isan culture is a vibrant and diverse amalgamation of traditions, practices, and influences found in the northeastern region of Thailand, known as Isan. Ethno-Regional Identity
The concept of Isan as a distinct "ethno-regional" group was first identified by Charles F. Keyes, an American anthropologist, in 1967. Rather than categorizing the Isan people as an ethnic minority, Keyes recognized their cultural differences as indicative of a specific region within Thailand. This understanding is significant in the context of Isan's sociopolitical history, which includes movements such as the Holy Men's Rebellions against Thai governmental integration policies.
Language
The Isan language, a dialect of Lao also known as Northeastern Thai, is spoken by the majority of the population in Isan. Despite historical attempts at cultural assimilation, such as the imposition of Central Thai language and the eradication of Lao Buddhist manuscripts, the Isan language has persisted. This is indicative of the region's cultural resilience and the shared linguistic heritage with Laos.
