Bronx County
Bronx County is one of the five counties that make up New York City and is coextensive with the Borough of the Bronx. It is the northernmost of the five boroughs and the only one primarily located on the U.S. mainland. The borough shares a land border with Westchester County to the north. To the south and west, the borough is bordered by the Harlem River and shares borders with the borough of Manhattan. To its south and east, it is separated from the borough of Queens by the East River.
Historical Context
The official establishment of Bronx County occurred in 1914 when it was carved out of New York County, which also comprises [Manhattan]. The county's history, however, dates back much further. Originally inhabited by the Siwanoy band of the Lenape, the area was explored by Henry Hudson in the early 17th century. The name "Bronx" is derived from Jonas Bronck, a Scandinavian settler whose 1639 farm became the first European settlement in the area.
Geography and Landmarks
The Bronx is home to numerous landmarks and attractions. Bronx Park, which is bisected by the Bronx River, contains the renowned New York Botanical Gardens and the Bronx Zoo, the largest urban zoological garden in the United States. Another significant site is Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center offering views of the New Jersey Palisades.
The Bronx River Parkway provides a scenic route through the county, reflecting the Bronx's efforts to maintain green spaces amidst urban development. The Bronx County Courthouse, also known as the Mario Merola Building, is a notable architectural landmark.
Demographics and Culture
The Bronx is renowned for its cultural diversity and vibrant communities. It has been a melting pot for immigrants from all over the world and is particularly known as the birthplace of hip hop music. The borough boasts a rich tapestry of cultural festivals, food, and arts. Neighborhoods such as Riverdale offer historical estates and affluent properties, while areas like South Bronx have undergone significant urban renewal and development.

Legally, Bronx County functions like other counties within New York State, with its own District Attorney and court system. The New York City Sheriff's Office operates within the borough, historically having its first sheriff in 1918.
Development and Economy
Throughout the 20th century, the Bronx experienced significant socioeconomic shifts. The early 1900s marked a boom period with a dramatic population increase, and by 1930, the population had reached 1.3 million. Although the mid-20th century saw urban decline, recent years have brought revitalization efforts that include infrastructural improvements and economic development initiatives.
