Born in South Salem, New York, Bob Ludwig demonstrated an early fascination with sound. At the age of eight, he began making recordings of radio programs using his first tape recorder. Ludwig pursued a formal education in music, earning both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York. As a classical musician, he was involved in Eastman's sound department and served as the principal trumpet of the Utica Symphony Orchestra.
During his time at Eastman, Ludwig was inspired by Phil Ramone, a legendary music producer, who conducted a summer recording workshop there. This encounter led Ludwig to work as Ramone's assistant, setting the stage for his illustrious career in the music industry.
