Biodiversity Portugal
Portugal, located on the Iberian Peninsula in Southwestern Europe, is renowned for its rich and diverse biodiversity. This diversity is a result of its unique geographical position and a variety of ecosystems both on land and at sea.
Portugal's geographical features include the mainland and the volcanic Atlantic archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores. The country encompasses a terrestrial area of approximately 92,000 km² and a marine area of 4 million km². Its highest point is Mount Pico, located in the Azores, which rises to 2,351 meters. The country is influenced by both Atlantic and Mediterranean climatic conditions, contributing to its diverse habitats.
Portugal is home to six terrestrial ecoregions, each supporting unique flora and fauna. These regions support a range of ecosystems, including forests, mountains, and coastal areas. Forests constitute the largest portion of protected areas, covering 44.2% of these regions, reflecting their ecological importance.
The extensive marine area provides a habitat rich in biodiversity, hosting numerous marine species. The Azores and Madeira archipelagos are particularly noteworthy for their unique marine ecosystems.
Portugal has established various protected areas under legal protection statutes to conserve its biodiversity. A significant part of this effort is through Natura 2000, a network aimed at protecting Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats. These sites vary in species and habitats protected, depending on their location and ecological features.
Despite the extensive biodiversity, Portugal faces challenges such as habitat loss, pollution, and wildfires. The recent wildfires have had significant ecological impacts, threatening biodiversity and increasing soil erosion. Conservation efforts are ongoing, with a focus on sustainable management and restoration of affected areas.
Henrique M. Pereira, a notable Portuguese conservation biologist, has contributed significantly to the understanding and conservation of Portugal's biodiversity. His work focuses on biodiversity conservation and sustainable ecosystems.
