Bina Refinery

Bina Refinery

The Bina Refinery is a significant oil refinery located in Bina, within the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is a prominent asset in India's oil refining landscape and is operated by Bharat Oman Refineries Limited (BORL), a subsidiary of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).

History and Development

The Bina Refinery was conceptualized as a joint venture between BPCL and Oman Oil Company. The collaboration aimed to enhance India's refining capacity and ensure a steady supply of petroleum products in the region. The refinery commenced operations to meet the growing demand for refined petroleum products in central India and its surrounding areas.

Capacity and Operations

Bina Refinery boasts a refining capacity of 156,000 barrels per day, making it one of the critical installations in the country. The facility is equipped with advanced hydrocracking and catalytic reforming processes, allowing it to produce a wide range of petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, aviation turbine fuel, and liquefied petroleum gas.

Strategic Importance

The strategic importance of the Bina Refinery stems from its location and capacity, as well as its role in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas of India's plans to enhance the country's energy security. The refinery also supports the industrial activities in the region, including the Jaypee Group's Bina Thermal Power Plant.

Ownership Changes

In March 2021, BPCL acquired the remaining stake held by OQ (formerly Oman Oil Company) in the Bina Refinery, thus becoming the sole proprietor of the facility. This acquisition is part of BPCL's broader strategy to consolidate its assets amidst the Indian government's ongoing divestment initiatives.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The Bina Refinery plays a crucial role in boosting the local economy by providing employment and stimulating industrial growth in the Sagar district. However, like all refineries, it must manage its environmental footprint, maintaining compliance with regulations to minimize emissions and waste.
