Bharatmala Pariyojna is a flagship infrastructure project initiated by the Government of India with the ambitious goal of enhancing the road network across the country. This initiative aims to significantly boost economic growth by improving connectivity between key areas, thereby facilitating smoother transportation and logistics.
Objectives and Scope
The primary objective of Bharatmala Pariyojna is to develop a robust national highway network by constructing and upgrading highways and expressways. The project envisions connecting 550 districts across India through an improved arterial road network. The expansive plan encompasses the development of major economic corridors, integrated check posts, and logistics parks to streamline freight traffic.
Phases and Budget
The Pariyojna is designed to be implemented in multiple phases, each focused on addressing specific infrastructural needs and challenges. The total budget for the first phase is approximately ₹692,324 crore (US$82 billion), scheduled for execution over a period from 2017 to 2022. This includes existing projects like the incomplete National Highways and other road development initiatives such as the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for the North Eastern Region and Externally Aided Projects.
Key Projects
Several significant highway projects are part of this initiative:
- Pune–Bengaluru Expressway: This greenfield expressway, part of Phase 2, is expected to run parallel to National Highway 48 and is targeted for completion by 2028.
- Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway: A crucial project aimed at reducing travel time between key Northern cities.
Integration with Other Initiatives
Bharatmala Pariyojna synergizes with other governmental initiatives like Sagar Mala Project aimed at port-led development and the Act East Policy to enhance connectivity with South Asian and Southeast Asian countries. It also aligns with the Bangladesh–Bhutan–Nepal–Myanmar–Thailand BIMSTEC corridors to improve regional cooperation and trade.
