History and Foundation
The roots of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre trace back to its founding by Homi Jehangir Bhabha, a pioneering Indian nuclear physicist often referred to as the "father of the Indian nuclear program". Initially established in January 1954 as the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay, the facility was later renamed in honor of Bhabha, following his unforeseen demise in 1966.
Contributions to Nuclear Science
BARC has been instrumental in India's pursuit of nuclear technology. Under the leadership of scientists like Raja Ramanna and P. K. Iyengar, the centre developed India's first nuclear reactor, Apsara, which became operational in 1956. This marked a significant milestone, positioning India as a leader in nuclear research in Asia.
The centre played a crucial role in the development of India's nuclear weapons program. It was integral to the successful execution of Operation Smiling Buddha, India's first nuclear bomb test conducted in 1974. The operational expertise for these tests was largely drawn from BARC.
