Benedictine College is a private liberal arts college located in Atchison, Kansas, in the United States. The college was established in 1971 through the merger of two separate institutions: Mount St. Scholastica College for women and St. Benedict's College for men. Both of these predecessor institutions were founded by the Benedictine religious order, which follows the Rule of Saint Benedict, a set of precepts written by Saint Benedict of Nursia.
History
The history of Benedictine College is deeply rooted in the Catholic Church and the Benedictine monastic tradition. St. Benedict's College was founded in 1858 by Benedictine monks and became a full-fledged college in 1863. Mount St. Scholastica College was established by Benedictine sisters in 1923. The merger of these two institutions in 1971 was part of a broader trend of consolidating religious and gender-segregated educational resources during this period.
