The Beiras e Serra da Estrela is an intermunicipal community and a NUTS3 subregion in the Centro Region of eastern Portugal. Established in 2013, it comprises a diverse landscape, rich in cultural heritage, natural beauty, and culinary delights. It plays a significant role in the administrative divisions of the country.
Geography and Environment
The region is known for its remarkable geographical features, including the Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal. This area is famous for its unique ecosystems and is a designated natural park. The community is also home to the Serra da Malcata Natural Reserve, the Douro International Natural Park, and the UNESCO Global Geopark. The Serra da Gardunha regional protected landscape and the private protected area of Faia Brava further enhance the region's environmental significance.
Historical Villages and Architecture
The Beiras e Serra da Estrela boasts a rich historical tapestry. It hosts nine of the twelve Historical Villages of Portugal, as well as several shale and mountain villages.
