Beijing Daxing International Airport

Beijing Daxing International Airport

Beijing Daxing International Airport is one of the two major airports serving Beijing, the capital city of China. The other is Beijing Capital International Airport. Situated 46 kilometers (29 miles) south of Beijing’s city center, the airport is located in Daxing District, a burgeoning area known for its development and expansion.

Development and Design

The airport was officially opened on September 25, 2019, and has since become a critical hub for air travel in China. It was designed by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, in collaboration with the airport operations team ADP Ingénierie. The architectural design is noted for its futuristic and sustainable features, such as utilizing natural light and energy-efficient systems. This design seeks to establish the airport as a state-of-the-art facility capable of handling significant passenger throughput.

The terminal building, often referred to as the "starfish" due to its shape, is the world's largest single-building terminal, covering over 700,000 square meters (7,500,000 square feet). The layout aims to minimize walking distances for passengers and optimize terminal operations, providing a streamlined experience for travelers.

Operations and Capacity

Beijing Daxing International Airport is designed to handle over 72 million passengers annually by 2025, with plans to increase capacity to 100 million in the future. This makes it one of the largest and most important hubs not only in China but globally. The airport serves as a base for several major airlines, including China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines, which have relocated numerous flights to this location due to its advanced facilities and strategic importance.

Connectivity and Transportation

The airport is well-connected to Beijing's urban center through the Daxing Airport Express, a high-speed rail link that connects the airport with key parts of the city. Additionally, it is linked to the national railway network through the Beijing–Xiong'an intercity railway, providing convenient access to nearby regions and enhancing the airport's role as a transportation hub.

Two expressways, the Beijing-Xiong'an Expressway and the Beijing-Kaifeng Expressway, also connect to the airport, ensuring smooth transit for road travelers. This comprehensive transportation network supports the airport's ambitious capacity goals and integrates it seamlessly with the region's infrastructure.

Economic and Regional Impact

The establishment of Beijing Daxing International Airport has had a significant impact on the local economy and the development of Daxing District. It has stimulated growth in sectors such as tourism, trade, and logistics, and has propelled the district into the spotlight as a major economic zone. The airport is expected to play a pivotal role in the Belt and Road Initiative, enhancing China's connectivity with the global economy.

Furthermore, the development of Daxing District around the airport includes significant investments in urban projects, including the Daxing Biomedical Industry Base, which aims to position the region as a hub for innovation and technology.
