The Bay of Plenty Region, known in Māori as Te Moana-a-Toitehuatahi, is a picturesque and vibrant area located in the North Island of New Zealand. This region is renowned for its stunning coastline, fertile lands, and rich cultural heritage. It stretches approximately 260 kilometers from the Coromandel Peninsula in the west to Cape Runaway in the east.
Geography
The Bay of Plenty is a bight on the northern coast, offering a diverse landscape ranging from beautiful beaches to lush forests. The region is home to significant geographical features such as Lake Rotoiti, part of a chain of lakes formed within the Ōkataina Caldera.
History
The Bay of Plenty has deep historical roots with the Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. According to local traditions, it was the landing point of several migration canoes, including the Mātaatua, Nukutere, Tākitimu, Arawa, and Tainui. Descendant iwi like Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Te Whakatōhea, Ngāi Tai, Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa ki Kawerau, Te Arawa, Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui, and Ngāti Pūkenga still inhabit the region.
During the 1830s and 1840s, the Bay of Plenty saw increased interaction between Māori and Europeans. This period marked the start of trade relations and missionary activities, although European settlement remained sparse. In 1853, the region was incorporated into the Auckland Province as part of New Zealand's subdivision into provinces.

The region's economy is diverse, with significant contributions from agriculture, forestry, and tourism.
