Basque Conflict
The Basque Conflict, also known as the Spain–ETA conflict, was a prolonged armed struggle between the Spanish state and Basque nationalist and separatist movements, particularly the organization known as ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna). Rooted in the quest for a Basque homeland, the conflict spanned from 1959 until a definitive ceasefire in 2011.
The conflict is deeply embedded in the unique identity and history of the Basque people, an ancient ethnic group in southwestern Europe. The Basque people have a distinct language and culture, which have fueled aspirations for greater autonomy or independence from Spain and France.
Basque nationalism emerged as a response to the centralization policies of the Spanish state, aiming to preserve Basque culture, language, and political rights. Nationalism became particularly fervent in the 20th century, driven by cultural and political suppression under Francisco Franco's dictatorship.
Founded in 1959, ETA aimed to achieve Basque independence through an armed struggle. Over decades, ETA was involved in numerous activities ranging from propaganda to violent attacks. Notable incidents include the assassination of Luis Carrero Blanco, the prime minister under Franco, in 1973, and various other acts of violence that led to extensive bloodshed and political turmoil.
The conflict had a profound impact on Spanish politics and society. It influenced the formation of various political parties and organizations that sought peaceful resolutions, such as Elkarri, while also affecting public opinion and policies regarding regional autonomy.
Throughout the conflict, numerous attempts were made to negotiate peace. Figures such as Brian Currin played key roles in facilitating dialogue. The culmination of these efforts was a permanent ceasefire declared by ETA in 2011, marking an end to decades of violence.
The Basque conflict has been depicted and explored in various forms of media. Films such as those listed in the List of films about the Basque conflict illustrate the personal and societal struggles experienced during this period.
