Ban Ki Moon
Ban Ki-moon is a renowned South Korean politician and diplomat who served as the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2016. His tenure marked a period of increased focus on environmental sustainability, human rights, and international peacekeeping. He was succeeded by António Guterres.
Ban Ki-moon was born on June 13, 1944, in a small farming village in South Korea. He later attended Seoul National University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in International Relations. Ban furthered his education in the United States, obtaining a Master's in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Before his appointment as Secretary-General, Ban had a distinguished career in South Korean diplomacy. He served in various capacities, including as the Foreign Minister of South Korea, where he played a pivotal role in diplomatic relations, particularly during critical periods of tension with North Korea.
One of Ban Ki-moon's most significant contributions as Secretary-General was his strong advocacy for climate change awareness and sustainable development. He was instrumental in facilitating the Paris Agreement, a landmark accord within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The agreement aimed to limit global warming and foster resilience against climate impacts.
Ban was also a staunch advocate for human rights. His leadership was crucial during humanitarian crises, notably the efforts to address the situation in Darfur, Sudan, and the political turmoil in Myanmar. He worked tirelessly to promote peace and security, often visiting conflict zones to advocate for peace and support UN peacekeeping missions.
Under Ban's leadership, the UN focused on global health issues, including the fight against pandemics such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. He supported initiatives to improve health care access in developing nations and advocated for the Millennium Development Goals to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
After his tenure, Ban continued to influence global policy through the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens, based in Vienna, Austria. The center aims to empower women and youth, promote education, and support global citizenship.
