The city of Bad Axe was officially established in 1905. Its unique name originates from an incident during the early days of its settlement. In 1861, while surveying the first state road through the Huron County wilderness, Rudolph Papst and George Willis Pack made camp at the future site of the city. There, they found a much-used and damaged axe, leading them to name the area Bad Axe.
